0:03 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

Hello Good morning. This is the media event to celebrate ‘Dynamite’ reaching the top spot on Billboard 100.

I am Kim Il-jung.

Today’s conference unfortunately will be in compliance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines. It will be held online. We ask for your understanding as this is in compliance with government measure.

Let me go over today’s schedule a little bit.

First, we will have comments from the members about reaching the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. And then we’ll answer some question from the members of the media.

I have a quick announcement about photographs. Press photos will be sent to your email before the end of the press conference.

Now then, we will begin the Dynamite BTS Billboard 100 №1 celebration media event.

Let’s say hello to the members of BTS.

3:27— Kim Il-Jung, MC

And finally, J-hope.

Thank you for all the attention and all the love and the affection you have shown for ‘Dynamite.’ We’re so happy to be able to meet you again with such great news.

It’s really great, and I’m really proud. I hope that you can write some good articles about us again. Thank you very much.

3:52— Kim Il-Jung, MC

We’ve had a chance to say hello.

I think congratulations are in order. Congratulations on reaching the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

It’s a historical moment. When I read these articles, I was extremely thrilled and I’m here because of this, meeting you again in just a couple of weeks

You guys must be really, really ecstatic. Let’s hear from each member.

4:18— Hoseok, J-Hope

I’ll begin.

To be honest, BTS reaching №1 on the Hot 100…We never imagined it. It still feels like a dream.

I feels like a dream, I don’t know if this is reality. I’m still shaking, I’m still excited. We started this because we love music, because we love dancing.

I’m very happy and excited that our sincerity was able to be reached out and resonate with so many people. I think it’s such an honor, both for us.

And I think it was the fans and the encouragement and energy that we received from our fans that drove us and allowed us to keep going.

I think that is what allowed today’s BTS to become who we are. And for J-Hope to become who I am.

So we’d like to thank all the fans for this honor.

5:31— Kim Il-Jung, MC

Thank you so much and you must be really excited and it feels like, you know, we are having this this media conference, it just feels more exciting.

Jimin, please.

5:46— Jimin

Yesterday, we were so happy so thrilled.

I think we calmed down a little bit, because we were going berserk because we were so happy. This is something that we never really imagined that would happened.

It was something, I think, at some point, we felt this is something we’d like to do, this is something we wanted to and look forward to and this is something the fans were also all looking forward to, just as we were and this is something that I think we wanted to experience at least once but now that we are here, still doesn’t feel like reality.

We were so happy, and I really wasn’t sure what I needed to think and how I needed to feel. I think we just thought about all the other members. I was really thankful to the members, who have been, we were all beside each other for this entire process.

We were so thankful to the fans, we were thankful to Producer Bang Si-Hyuk, to all our Big Hit Staff, and our family.

I think we were really thankful. And I think the only thing we can say at this point is, thank you and we’ll try to repay all the love you’ve shown us.

7:10 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

I heard that Jimin you just kept crying and crying and crying.

Maybe we’ll have a chance to hear little more from Jimin.

RM, please.

7:21— Namjoon, RM

I think I didn’t, never thought that we will have this sort of conference and say these kinds of things.

And I was waiting all night, and I was the first to receive this news. And we had a lot of things happening that day, we had practice.

When we have these things, I can’t really sleep. So I thought now that I’ve checked this, now I know this, I should go to sleep.

And it was kind of, I can’t remember this saying right now.

But, there is Korean saying, you know, when you are shocked after seeing the lid of caldron, you are shocked when you see a turtle, something like that.

So, I just went to sleep.

I thought, I wanted to.. I didn’t want to over-excite myself.

I thought a lot about our past. Eating together, you know being scolded together, and the practice studio, and being in the recording studio, talking to each other.

I thought I wanted to preserve my emotions, sort of. I think my contribution to this accomplishment is very small.

It’s really the ARMY, the other members here, all our staff, the songwriters, members of the press.

I think this is an achievement that was made possible by all of these contributions.

8:49— Kim Il-Jung, MC

Listening to your reactions, I honestly still doesn’t hit home, for me.

Jung Kook?

8:58— Jungkook

I heard the news a little bit later.

When I checked the news, learned that we have reached the top of the chart. And I wasn’t sure this webpage I was looking at was really real.

I was just, I think, out of it for a little bit.

And this really are our ARMY who has helped us reach this milestone and make this achievement.

I want to say thank you to all of our ARMY and also to all the other members. I am so thankful that I was able to meet these great people, this great company, this great staff, and ARMY.

And all of these good things, you know, positive vibes came together and they enabled this achievement to become reality.

I am so thankful to all the other members, and I feel like this, how should I say, being able to be a part of such a milestone is a great honor.

For me, entire my lifetime… it was actually my birthday yesterday.

So.. couple of days ago it felt like a huge birthday present and I felt that I’m glad I was born and I want to say once again thank you to my mom and dad and also to ARMY.

Love you so much.

10:25— Kim Il-Jung, MC

Thank you, Jung Kook. Sincere congratulations on your belated birthday.

Yes. Jin, please.

10:33— Seokjin, Jin

When I saw the news I remembered we have our chat room and RM posted a picture. It was about 10–20 min before the wide release and RM said, “Actually this is a doctored picture. Fake one.”

Then 10–20 minutes later, RM posted the same picture again. Then I thought this is real and realized this is real a screenshot.

I went on to Weverse. It’s an app that we communicate with our fans. I kept writing a message and erasing it. I was thinking about how can I express these feelings to our fans and I realized that the only thing I can say is BTS with ARMY is something that we achieve together.

That’s what I wrote for us and our fans.

I think this is the song that we made because we wanted to enjoy it together with our fans and the fact that we’re able to achieve this really made us happy. This is really all thanks to our fans. Thank you so much.

11:50— Kim Il-Jung, MC

You said you didn’t see it real at all. you thought it was a fake picture but it is real one!

Next. SUGA, please.

11:58— Yoongi, SUGA

I’m still having a hard time grasping this is real.

We talked a lot about our goals and we often say №1 on the Billboard Hot 100 …This is something we would like to have but then it became a goal. It’s not like we worked hard and strove to reach this goal and everything is for reaching this goal.

It’s more like it feels like a dream that we reached this goal and the fact that we have accomplished this.. there was this surge, a thrill, and excitement that we have reached this goal.

When I learned about this news, I actually pinched myself to see if it’s real.

12:43— Hoseok, J-Hope

I think SUGA was the most excited.

12:47— Yoongi, SUGA

Yes I think it was really great for me because the Billboard Charts is something that is very familiar to me. I listened to the songs on the charts even from when I was really little.

So I have to thank all of our ARMY, our fans who made all of this possible

13:06— Kim Il-Jung, MC

SUGA’s dream becomes real.

Let’s hear a bit more about that later.

V, please

13:14— Taehyung, V

I didn’t think BTS would be in such limelight on the global stage. We came to Seoul from different provinces with nothing. We had a very small practice studio in the basement it was just seven of us practicing and working together and these are all very fresh in my mind.

When I first came to Seoul from a different province, I don’t know why this stayed with me for so long but it was me and my dad. We took a cab and we were actually cheated by the taxi driver.

14:05— Kim Il-Jung, MC

Did he take you for a ride?

14:08 — Taehyung, V

And we went through three tunnels to reach our destination. This memory still stayed with me about when we were starting out. And comparing this memory to what we have achieved now

I didn’t realize when my dad said, “Oh things like that happen.” I was angry but now I feel that these are the kind of things that happen.

By being able to say that, these have become cherished memories and fun memories and all of the difficulties we had to go through practicing as trainees, training all these are now pleasant memories and that really amplifies the joy I have now and I feel that I received some kind of gift
it makes me really happy.

So I think today I am going to set down any worries and concerns. I just want to be happy for us and I hope everyone can smile and laugh even if it’s just for today.

15:31 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

I am sure you have been supporting each other a lot.

Now we listened to what BTS had to say from RM through to V as well.

Having experienced this achievement I am sure it reminds you of your past. Now let’s take a trip to your past.

Q: Would you please share with us what it felt like when you first made it onto the Billboard Chart?

It was December of 2015 when you made it onto the main album chart which is the Billboard 200. You made it onto number 171 for “HYYH Pt. 2.

It was five years ago and it was your first time so it’s probably seared into your memory

Q: What did it feel like? and how does it compare to today?

16:17 — Hoseok, J-Hope

I think we were much more excited back then. We were very much in disbelief. Seeing our group name on the Billboard Chart was very shocking and we were in awe of that.

16:38 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

How about you, Jung Kook?

16:40 —Jungkook

I think I was the same as J-Hope. It was impossible to achieve that kind of feat. We couldn’t believe it, was it real or was it a dream? That’s what we felt back then.

And since we had that result we wanted to reach for new heights and that’s how we got even more driven.

17:14 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

Right that was five years ago. It was very enjoyable to watch you reach greater heights. And when we talk of goals we need to talk to SUGA.

There’s a saying that SUGA’s dream always comes true. Now we would like to know what your next goal is.

17:36 — Yoongi, SUGA

All of our goals that I’ve mentioned becoming a reality makes me very happy and I feel a great sense of accomplishment.

I also think that I need to be careful about what I say when it comes to goals.

I am so happy that we achieved this great feat and now I start to think what our next goal should be.

This new song, ‘Dynamite’ it’s not that we released it to make it onto the Hot 100 we simply put it out to send out more energy in the world. I am very happy that so many people listened to this and became energized. That fact makes me happier than topping the Hot 100 chart.

I guess I do have to mention our new goal. I feel a bit pressured right now. This is a lot of pressure for me.

We went to the Grammy’s at the beginning of the year and we did a collaboration performance.

Now I would like to put on a single performance, just BTS on the Grammy Awards stage. It would be great to receive an award but that’s not going to become a reality just because we want it we need a lot of help from a lot of people.

Just getting to perform on the Grammy Awards stage is our goal.

19:34— Kim Il-Jung, MC

Now we would like to answer some of the questions that the members of the press sent in to us.

First we have a question from Yoon Sang-guen of Star News,

Q: It probably doesn’t seem real that you have topped the 100 chart for the first time.

“What are some of the things you talked about when you heard the news?”

And then our next question is from Kim Hyun-sik from E Daily,

Q: Jimin left on social media that tears kept flowing after you learned this news. We’d like to hear a little bit about where those tears came from.

“Why you couldn’t stop crying? And if you have any other episodes about when you first heard this news.”

20:21 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

Jimin? Why did you cry so much?

20:26 — Jimin

Actually, I don’t really know. I heard this news, I think it was three. What time was it? About 3:20, 3:30. It was like after 4 AM that I heard this news. I was basically crying until 7AM, then I just fell asleep, exhausted from crying.

First I was really shocked. I was with Jungkook. We were thrilled, we were really excited. And then we were just staring at the chart, just sort of caressing our phones in our hands. I started crying and tears starting coming out.

We started to talk with the other members. We said to Namjoon, it’s because of you that we accomplished all of this. We had this conversation with the members all morning. I think what we talked about the most was that this is possible for us. We can really do this.

Looking back, there were things we wanted to do, there were things we continued to do, things we kept doing. And this felt like an acknowledgement or reward for all of the things we have been doing this whole time.

And being able to join together and do this in such difficult times for everybody and being praises and lauded for this accomplishment, I think really made us happy and made me cry and really gave us energy.

22:16— Kim Il-Jung, MC

I’m sure it really felt really thankful, exciting and thrilling.

22:21 —Jimin

What I really wanted to do was perform. The first thing that came to my mind was, I really want to see our fans. I just wanted to see ARMY so much.

I think everyone wanted to go on stage, I think we all would have cried through the whole process. It feels unfortunate that we couldn’t do that.

22:47— Kim Il-Jung, MC

Next question, we have a question from Kim Eun-hae of OSEN.

Q: Dynamite being seen as having captured the American general public.

“What do you think is the biggest reason why you were able to attract the members of the general public to this particular song?”

23:12 — Namjoon, RM

It’s not an easy question to answer, I think. And that’s because, of course it’s not just, №1 on the Hot 100, the Billboard chart it’s not something you can achieve with only fan support.

I’m not sure what the exact line between fans and the general public and their acceptance and reaction is. But as Jimin said, this is something that we continue to pursue. A door we need to knock on, something that we continue to adhere. It could be our performances, our behind the scenes, and what we said, what we did, what we showed.

When you do something, when someone does something with sincerity it doesn’t always resonate with other people.

Sometimes we do something and that’s not acknowledge or rewarded.

Now, with the COVID situation and other things there are things that we have, you know, not come to fruition things that we couldn’t continue to do, and so on.

But BTS is a team, but sometimes I feel, is this our team? Is this really BTS?

Because, the records we’ve set, the milestones we’ve reached. I think it’s the power of music and the power of performance it’s something that we continue to talk about.

Something that, whether it’s our business, or something from our business side. It could be our interactions with the press outside. I think ‘Dynamite’ was more familiar because of the language as well as other elements.

The language and disco pop were familiar to the American public. Something that’s easy to sing and hum along with. It doesn’t have an overarching macro-level message. Sometimes, simpler messages really get across.

I dare say that all these factors came together to create this achievement. I think we were very lucky. I think it’s our responsibility to understand this and continue to do this and make sure we don’t forget these lessons.

25:44 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

Yes, this song is very hummable.

25:47 — Namjoon, RM

Yes, that’s very important.

25:51 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

I keep humming because it’s something that needs to come naturally.

A song that really gives you energy and easy to listen to. I think that’s why so many people have come to love it.

Next question is from Park Yoonji of My Daily.

Q: The members of BTS in ‘B-side Music Video’ were emulating Noh Hongchul and this became big news online, the ‘Noh Hongchul Parody Theory.’

“Did you actually see this and parody Comedian Noh Hongchul? How did this come about?”

26:26 — Jungkook

Actually when we saw the B-Side MV, we were surprised too. There were some cues by the director and some gestures he suggested to us.

Then we were doing this and we were looking at some videos online and we saw this particular video that everyone’s talking about and sharing.

I did it lightly as part of the many gestures we did. This was for the rehearsal. It wasn’t when the cameras were rolling for the main shot. It was more of a joke but it really made it to the B-Side MV.

So we were really surprised. We thought it was really funny. We didn’t realize that this would have such an impact, we thought it was pretty funny.

27:19 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

I think it’s the amazing energy Noh Hongchul is known for came through to BTS and you really did a good job emulating him.

27:30 — Jimin

We really love the program, “Infinite Challenge.”

Even before we worked on this music video, this video was actually a big hit among us.

Even before we worked on this music video, it was a fad between us. We watched it and danced to it together. We couldn’t imagine this would be in the MV.

As Jung Kook said, this was for the rehearsal. We watch our rehearsal footage so we did it so we can laugh but it was in the MV so we were really shocked.
We thought it was really funny.

28:13 — Jungkook

But I’m glad so many people liked it.

28:21 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

We say “synchronization rate” in Korean.

28:24 —Taehyung, V

Jimin, can you show it to us right here? For the members of the press. Show how you feel.

28:34 — Hoseok, J-Hope

The eyebrows are the keypoint.

28:36 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

Yes, right there. Those eyebrows. It was thanks to you we all had a good laugh. It made everybody happy.

Let’s move on to the next question.

We have a question from Hwang Hyejin of Newsen.

Q: At your debut showcase seven years ago, You said it’s not easy for new artists to succeed but we will try to stay on course and become a group that can be loved by the public. Now you’ve grown to be an artist that has a song on the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

“If there’s something you can say or you’d like to say to BTS seven years ago?”

29:21 — Hoseok, J-Hope

Thank you for the question and always thank you for your great questions.

Seven years ago, it feels like a long time ago. There were a lot of new groups. And to stand out, the only thing that we could do was really work hard like our life depended on it. We did our best and we went as hard as we could as far as it was physically possible for us.

Just like we said on the showcase, I think we really worked hard to really get our name out, even if it was just one more time. People will hear our name one more time, say our name one more time. That was our goal to stay alive till the end.

And we have reached milestones and accomplishments far beyond what I imagined or expected. It’s an honor, and we are always very thankful.

And I feel like we have reached our goals we have set out to reach 7 years ago. And it feels that the world has acknowledged our sincerity and our authenticity, and that makes me very happy and proud.

If I were to say something to myself 7 years ago, I would like to say that, you know, this J-Hope really is someone who work really hard and I want to tell him that your efforts did not betray you, your efforts bore fruit.

And all the other members are really precious to me, I think I’ve said it many times, but I think this is something that deserves to be said. I think the members are very precious to me and these are people who have become a major reason for my life and my existence.

And I want to say thank you to the members for being with me for 7 years, and to ask them to be with us, be together, be with me for the rest of my life. To take this opportunity to say, I love you, to all the members.

31:33 — Jimin

Love you J-Hope.

31:39 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

I think j-hope spoke for all the other members. To himself and the other members 7 years ago that your effort will not betray you, it will eventually bare fruit.

Next question is from Kim Seon Woo from Sports Seoul.

Q: When we say BTS, we have to say ARMY. Even in your lyrics for Boy With Luv, it contained your love and expressed your love to ARMY.

“What is and who is ARMY for you?”

32:07 — Seokjin, Jin

I think, topping the chart is all thanks to ARMY. ARMY is someone who we want to share good news first. And hide sad news. We just want to show positive sides, good things and share good thoughts and good things.

Dynamite’ was a song that we worked on, that began from our desire to enjoy together with our fans. And we have enjoyed the song, and amidst this enjoyment.

We were able to reach this great goal and achievement. It is because ARMY exist, that we exist, and we are always thankful and we always want to show the best side of us to ARMY.

And we want to and we will keep working hard so we can give some happiness and joy to ARMY.

ARMY, we love you.

33:18 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

Next question is Kim Hyunji of Ilgan Sports.

Q: In post-COVID19 age, more people are spending time at home and things have changed, lifestyles have changed. We are no longer able to enjoy small things that give us happiness in life, that used to give happiness in life.

“Where do you gain your, get your consolation your healing and happiness?”

33:37 — Yoongi, SUGA

I have developed a lot of new hobbies. I’ve started to draw a little bit on a large canvas. I’ve tried to play the guitar. It’s not just me, I think all the other members thought, with things being so tough though about what they can do.

We started to work on our new album that will come in the second half of this year.

Some of us have started to work out a little more.

We’ve come to do things we couldn’t really do before and that has provided us a measure of consolation and healing.

34:22 — Hoseok, J-Hope

Namjoon has been working out his arm. I was shocked when I saw them.

34:32 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

Yes, we can see the muscles.

34:34 — Namjoon, RM

Actually I’ve only been working out for about a month and a half.

34:36 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

This is when your muscles swell up.

34:39 — Namjoon, RM

Yes I’m dying.

34:41— Kim Il-Jung, MC

New things things that you haven’t been able to experience and you’re doing them now.

We have a question from Cho Eunbyeol of BridgeEconomy.

Q: The 2020 World Tour was cancelled but you reached the top of the chart.

“How would 2020 be remembered by BTS?”

35:03 — Namjoon, RM

Yes, that’s right. The start of 2020 was pretty good I think. We had our comeback and we were preparing our tour. We were on schedule to go on tour. Everyone has plans.

Before spring, we had COVID-19 outbreak. We weren’t sure what we should do. We became angry. That’s what happened.

I don’t think it’s a matter of how will 2020 be remembered but how we want it to be remembered.

And I think for me, what I would like is for this COVID-19 situation to settle down.

There are a lot of forecasts we don’t know what will happen in the future. What awaits us regarding this situation. But I hope that we can remember when I look back, this happened

We couldn’t go on tour. Because we couldn’t go on tour, we couldn’t meet our fans around the world. But, we had these achievements. №1 on the Billboard Hot 100, for example.

And I think I would like to remember 2020 has being we did all this, we tried really hard. Not so much that this is the start of a new era. There is no face-to-face interaction. We would not like this to be signaling that sort of a change.

Because we were happy that we reached the top of the chart. But still I would be sad if that is what this year is remembered for.

I would like to say in the future ‘That was the tough year. We couldn’t go on tour but we had our comeback. We had ‘Dynamite.’ We did all that we could and try our best.’

I would like to remember 2020 as a year in which we tried our best.

To do that, to remember this year as that kind of year, we’re working hard and recording our performances. We’re trying to do what we can do in the positions we’re in.

That’s what we would like to do. To keep doing what we can do where we are. I think it’s going to be unforgettable year for a lot of people.

37:19 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

Listening to what RM was saying, in the future we hope we could say that 2020 isn’t the end of the tunnel and that we could remember as start of a new hope.

And then our next question is from Ahn Jin-Yong from Munhwa.

Q: I’m curious about the next steps. I’d like to hear from you — any specific goals or directions like ‘top the Billboard Hot 100, rather and abstract ones?’

38:22 —Jimin

I will answer this first.

I think you want something concrete and more specific. But I don’t think I can give you a clear-cut answer. I will try my best, though.

This is my opinion. Of course, we will try our best to whatever that is in our reach. There are things that we have to do and things we can do.

In the future, we’ll continue to do performances that we can and we’ll prepare for them.

The situation isn’t very good with COVID-19 and the situation is dire. In order for COVID-19 to end, so many people are doing their best and trying their best to crack down on this disease.

We still need a lot more time and energy for this situation to come to an end. And we need everyone to come together to make a combined effort. I know that we can’t do anything about the hurt that has occurred but what we can do though is to heal these people to the best of our abilities.

So, We will do our very best to make this happen. This will be our new goal.

And the aspect of our career like what SUGA said, I would like to show the world that there is a group called BTS, I would love to put on a concert, too.

40:39 — Namjoon, RM

So many members of the press want to know our future direction. And all of this attention I’m very grateful for this.

I’m very grateful for having these opportunities to tell you what we would like and what we want our future to be like. And I’m also very grateful for that.

Jimin already said everything needs to be said but I would like to just add this one thing.

The Grammy Awards is something all of the performers dream of.

Of course, we would like to perform there, too. We would, of course, like to be nominated. It would be great to receive the award. That is the direction we should be headed for.

We grew up watching the awards and ironically all of the concerts and performances that we put on…That itself has been our dream. I have this very complicated, mixed feelings.

Of course, we need to work on our performance, but I don’t know when it will be. We like to put on a festival. A really big performance to bring together everyone. That itself feels very unrealistic at the moment. That itself is a very big dream putting on a show outdoors. This is our dream.

And also, another short one. There’s another album that we’ve been preparing very hard for. I’m not sure if it’ll be online or offline. Probably online, but we’ll put on another concert.

BTS will do our very best at the things we can do

We will never forget what we’re doing at the moment. We will be as BTS as we possibly can. We say “check it up.” We will on stage and off, we’ll “check it up” all the time.

Thank you very much.

43:03 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

That was amazing. I imagined what that would be like everyone coming together and putting on a show, a festival, enjoying this festival. I really hope that comes true, soon.

We have another question from a foreign member of the press. It’s from Monica (Lenika) Cruz from The Atlantic.

Q: You recently performed Dynamite for the first time at the MTV VMA, becoming the first Korean act to perform in all 4 major music shows The Grammys, the Billboards, the American Music Award, and now the VMAs.

“What was it like reaching this last milestone?”

43:50 — BTS

Would you like to say something V?

43:52 — Taehyung, V

In fact, a while ago, when Hoseok was speaking.

I was really touched. I cried a little bit. I saw him cry. I was really surprised. What is this? This is such a happy day, why am I crying?

But to answer your question.

We have been practicing and working towards all these. We have been watching the videos, we tried following all of these major award shows. We were wondering if we would ever stand on these stages.

This may seem like far down the road but performing on these stages, itself seems like a dream come true.

Thinking that we have touched all of ARMY is something that I would like to applaud ourselves for the rest of our lives. It will be a memory that’s seared forever, for a very very long time.

45:21 — Kim Il-Jung, MC

That was a very touching, very heartfelt comment.

We’ve answered all of the questions for the members of the press. Thank you once again for sending in so many questions. This is not the end, though.

To all of the members of the media, would you please say goodbye to each and every one of them?

V?
